The trombone is a musical instrument in the brass family. Like all brass instruments, sound is produced when the player’s vibrating lips (embouchure) cause the air column inside the instrument to vibrate.
Unlike other brass instrument that using a valve, the trombone mostly uses a telescoping slide mechanism that varies the length of the instrument to change the pitch, but special variants like the valve trombone have three valves, like those on a trumpet.
A person who plays the trombone is called a trombonist or trombone player.
As portrayed in Hibike! Euphonium
There are six students that play trombone in Kitauji's Concert Band, including:
- Shuuichi Tsukamoto
- Hideri Noguchi (Principal Trombone)
- Sayaka Fukui
- Maki Akamatsu
- Mei Taura
- Sekina Iwata
Noboru Taki also played trombone from elementary school through college, where he majored in music education with a concentration in trombone performance. Mamiko Oumae also played the trombone until she had to quit to focus on academics, and Azusa Sasaki, a friend of Kumiko's from middle school, plays the trombone at Rikka High School.
- The trombone is the only instrument in the wind band other than the B♭ clarinet that can slide smoothly between wide pitch intervals.
- Trombonists are often stereotyped as being annoying, overly talkative people. Trombonists are also most often the greatest pranksters in the band, and often round up members from all over the brass section to aid in their various shenanigans.
- Trombones, and bass trombones in particular, are said to have the following dynamic range: on or off.
